The Peleş Castle in the idyllic settlement of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania is a true fairytale building. The construction which started in 1873 was a real international venture. Queen Elizabeth of Romania remembered the construction phase: “The Italians were the masonry, the Rumanians built the terraces, the Gypsies were the auxiliary workers. Albanians and Greeks worked with stones, Hungarians and Germans were carpenters, Turks burned the brick. The engineers were Poles, the stonemasons were Czechs. The French were drawing, the English were measuring … “. The workers talked about 14 different languages.
